Roses, teddy bears, chocolates and condoms

CUPID is in our neighbourhood, shooting arrows of love and ... condoms.

National Condom Week starts on today.
Condom Week is a campaign aimed at “increasing the use of condoms amongst sexually active people”, said Sister Yvonne of the Campus Heath and Wellness Centre.

It is also to introduce the concept of safer sexual practices “sp that people take full responsibility for their sexual health”.
Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre counsellor and health education co-ordinator Nicole Barnes said a tent would be pitched on the library lawns on Thursday and numerous NGOs and community organisations will be present. Students will get the opportunity to sign up with some of the organisations for volunteer work.

Testing for HIV will be done on Thursday and Friday at Campus Health and the Satellite Clinic on Education Campus between 11 am and 2 pm.
Thokozane Dyosini, a 1st year BEd student gives the campaign a thumps up.
“It’s a good thing because students become ignorant and don’t take it seriously when it’s not in their faces.”

Another student, Dillea J. Himbara, agrees that some students take HIV and Aids lightly and tend to overlook the consequences of unsafe sex.
The campaign will also celebrate the romance of Valentine’s Day to “encourage students to love cautiously”, said Barnes. There will be edutainment outside the Matrix on Friday during lunch featuring music, performances and dance-offs.

If you have any questions or need a one-on-one consultation, make an appointment at Campus Health. Everything is kept confidential.
